Gunman Kills 4, Including NYPD Officer, in Midtown Manhattan Shooting

New York City — July 28, 2025

A mass shooting rocked Midtown Manhattan Monday evening after a lone gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office building, leaving four people dead, including an off-duty NYPD officer, before taking his own life.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story commercial tower housing major firms including Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG. Witnesses reported chaos as the suspect, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and wearing body armor, entered the building and began shooting indiscriminately in the lobby.

The gunman has been identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, Nevada. Authorities say Tamura traveled across the country in the days leading up to the attack and had a documented history of mental illness. He was later found dead on the 33rd floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Among the victims was Officer Didarul Islam, an off-duty NYPD officer working private security. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was praised by officials for his bravery in attempting to stop the shooter. Two civilians and a security guard were also fatally shot. Another person remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Mayor Eric Adams called the shooting “a horrifying act of violence in the heart of our city,” while NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban vowed a full investigation. Authorities say there is currently no known connection between the shooter and the victims or the businesses in the building.

The NYPD, FBI, and other federal agencies are working to piece together Tamura’s motive and background. The building was evacuated and secured within an hour.
