Mathias Pogba, the elder brother of French football star Paul Pogba, has been sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in an extortion plot against his brother. A Paris court handed down the sentence on December 19, 2024, alongside a €20,000 fine. Mathias will serve the remaining year under electronic monitoring rather than incarceration. Five others implicated in the case received prison sentences ranging from three to eight years.
The case emerged in 2022 when Paul Pogba revealed that he had been targeted by an organized group, which included his brother Mathias and childhood friends. The group reportedly demanded €13 million from Paul in exchange for "protection services" that allegedly spanned over 13 years. During one incident, Paul was coerced into paying €100,000 to the group under duress.
Investigations revealed that the group orchestrated their demands by luring Paul Pogba to an apartment, where armed men reportedly threatened him. The extortion attempt escalated when Mathias released videos online, accusing his brother of using witchcraft against French teammate Kylian Mbappé. These allegations further strained the public and personal relations between the two brothers.
The court identified Roushdane K., a close associate of the Pogba family, as the mastermind of the extortion. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. This case not only exposed the complex familial dynamics within the Pogba family but also highlighted the extent to which trust can be exploited in personal relationships.
Paul Pogba, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, has been battling challenges both on and off the field. Currently serving a doping suspension, Paul’s contract with Juventus was terminated, leaving his football career in jeopardy.
