The Ibadan Funfair tragedy has taken a significant legal turn as a court has ordered the remand of Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Oriyomi Hamzat, a prominent broadcaster. This development follows the tragic stampede at a children's Christmas event held in Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which resulted in the deaths of more than 35 minors and left several others injured.
The event, organized by the Wings Foundation in collaboration with Agidigbo FM, drew a large crowd but lacked adequate crowd control measures. The tragic stampede has raised questions about the safety and planning of large public gatherings, particularly those targeting children. Prophetess Naomi, a key sponsor of the event, and Hamzat, representing Agidigbo FM, were arrested alongside six others and charged with a four-count offense, including conspiracy and negligence leading to the disaster.
The charges fall under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000, which criminalizes acts of negligence that lead to loss of life. The court ruled for their remand while investigations continue to determine the full extent of their liability in the tragedy.
Public outrage has mounted over the incident, with many demanding accountability from event organizers and government regulators. The Oyo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force have intensified their investigations, with the Inspector-General of Police taking a personal interest in the case.
