Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of Nigeria's former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a UK prison and has returned to Nigeria. Mrs. Ekweremadu arrived in the country on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, marking an end to her incarceration following a high-profile trial in the United Kingdom.
The Ekweremadus were convicted in May 2023 for their involvement in an organ trafficking case, a verdict that sparked widespread reactions both in Nigeria and internationally. Mrs. Ekweremadu received a six-year sentence, while her husband was handed a nine-year and eight-month term. The case stemmed from their attempt to procure a kidney donor for their ailing daughter, an act the court ruled as exploitative under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.
Her return has been met with celebrations, particularly in Enugu State, where the Ekweremadus hail from. Community leaders, supporters, and well-wishers have expressed relief at her release, with many taking the opportunity to call for clemency for her husband, who remains in custody.
