Causes and Risk Factors
The disease arises from multiple etiologies, with alcoholic cirrhosis remaining the most prevalent cause in Western countries. Viral hepatitis (HBV, HCV), metabolic conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and genetic disorders like Wilson’s disease and hemochromatosis are also major contributors. Diagnosis and Management
Definitive diagnosis relies on liver biopsy, but non-invasive imaging techniques such as ultrasound, elastography (FibroScan), and MRI are increasingly used. Key laboratory findings include elevated liver enzymes (AST, ALT, ALP, GGT), decreased albumin levels, and prolonged clotting times (PT/INR).
Treatment strategies focus on addressing underlying causes, lifestyle modifications, and managing complications:
Alcohol cessation and weight loss for NAFLD patients.
Antiviral therapy for viral hepatitis.
Phlebotomy and copper chelation for metabolic disorders.
Medications for symptom management, including diuretics for ascites, beta-blockers for esophageal varices, and lactulose for encephalopathy.
For patients with end-stage cirrhosis, liver transplantation remains the only curative option. Prognosis is assessed using the Child-Pugh Score and MELD Score, which help determine the severity of the disease and prioritize patients for transplantation.

As liver disease cases continue to rise, particularly due to increasing obesity and alcohol consumption, medical experts emphasize the importance of early detection and intervention. Public health measures, including vaccination programs for hepatitis and awareness campaigns on alcohol-related liver damage, remain crucial in curbing the impact of cirrhosis worldwide.
