This layer is rich in ozone molecules (O₃), which are made up of three oxygen atoms. Despite being relatively thin, the ozone layer acts as a protective shield for the Earth.
The primary function of the ozone layer is to absorb most of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without this protection, excessive UV rays would reach the Earth’s surface, causing serious damage to living organisms. Increased exposure to UV radiation can lead to skin cancer, cataracts, weakened immune systems in humans, and can also harm plants, marine life, and ecosystems. Thus, the ozone layer is essential for maintaining environmental balance and human health.
However, human activities have significantly damaged the ozone layer. The release of ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and other industrial chemicals has caused thinning of the ozone layer, especially over the Antarctic region, commonly known as the “ozone hole.” These substances break down ozone molecules, reducing the layer’s ability to block UV radiation.
Recognizing this global threat, countries around the world came together to adopt the Montreal Protocol in 1987. This international agreement aimed to phase out the production and use of ozone-depleting substances. As a result of these efforts, scientists have observed signs of gradual recovery of the ozone layer.
