Khartoum, Sudan – February 26, 2025 – A Sudanese military transport plane crashed into a residential area near the Wadi Sayidna air base in Omdurman on Tuesday night, killing at least 46 people and injuring 10 others. The aircraft, an Antonov transport plane, went down shortly after takeoff, causing severe damage to homes and infrastructure.
According to initial reports, the plane suffered a technical malfunction, though an official investigation is still underway. Among the dead is Major General Bahr Ahmed, a senior military commander stationed in Khartoum. Both military personnel and civilians were among the victims.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of devastation, with debris scattered across the neighborhood and emergency responders working to recover bodies and assist the injured. The impact of the crash also led to power outages in the area. Rescue operations continued overnight, with authorities searching for any survivors trapped under the wreckage.
This incident comes at a time of ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a war that has been raging since April 2023. The fighting has caused massive displacement and loss of life across Sudan, further straining the nation’s resources.
The Sudanese military has yet to release an official statement on the cause of the crash, but aviation analysts suggest that maintenance issues, exacerbated by the country’s prolonged instability, may have played a role.
