Guanajuato, Mexico – A brutal mass shooting in Guanajuato, Mexico, left eight people dead on Saturday night, marking yet another outbreak of violence in the country’s most dangerous state. Authorities confirmed on Sunday that five women and three men were gunned down in the streets of the town of Apaseo el Alto.
According to a statement from the Guanajuato prosecutor’s office, the victims were found with multiple gunshot wounds, but their identities have not yet been released. The gunmen, whose motives remain unclear, managed to flee the scene, and no arrests have been made so far.
Guanajuato, a state known for its industrial development and rich cultural history, has been at the center of Mexico’s drug war in recent years. The violence is largely driven by an ongoing turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang. These criminal organizations have been battling for control of lucrative drug trafficking routes and extortion operations, leading to widespread killings and insecurity.
Saturday’s massacre adds to the mounting death toll in a region that has become a hotspot for cartel violence. Mexican authorities have struggled to curb the bloodshed despite deploying federal security forces to Guanajuato. The wave of violence has put pressure on the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose security strategy has been criticized for failing to reduce cartel-related crime.
As investigators work to identify the victims and track down the perpetrators, residents of Guanajuato remain on edge, fearing further bloodshed in a state that continues to be one of the most dangerous places in Mexico.
