Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX is targeting the end of next year for its first Mars-bound mission using Starship — and it won’t be carrying humans just yet. Instead, it’ll be sending Optimus robots, humanoid machines developed by Tesla, to begin exploring the Red Planet.
Mars, sitting about 140 million miles away from Earth, has always been a focal point for humanity’s dream of becoming a multi-planetary species. Musk’s plan? To get the groundwork started with intelligent, autonomous machines before humans ever set foot there.
“The goal is to send Optimus to Mars to lay the foundation for future colonization,” Musk said during a recent tech summit. These robots will handle tasks like surveying terrain, building infrastructure, and testing out life-support systems — critical steps toward making Mars habitable for humans.
Starship, SpaceX’s revolutionary rocket, is central to this plan. Designed to be fully reusable and capable of deep-space travel, it’s undergone several tests and will soon be ready for its most ambitious mission yet.
While the timeline is bold — some would say wildly optimistic — Musk is no stranger to chasing the impossible. And if he succeeds, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter in space history.
