UEFA Sanctions Mbappé, Rüdiger, and Ceballos Over Indecent Conduct

 

Madrid, April 4, 2025 — UEFA has officially sanctioned Real Madrid players Kylian Mbappé, Antonio Rüdiger, and Dani Ceballos following what it described as “indecent conduct” during post-match celebrations after their recent Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid.

In a statement released on Thursday, European football’s governing body confirmed financial penalties and suspended match bans for the players involved.

Defender Antonio Rüdiger received the most severe punishment, fined €40,000 and handed a one-match suspension, which has been suspended for one year. UEFA cited a throat-slitting gesture made by Rüdiger toward Atlético Madrid supporters as the reason for the disciplinary action.

Kylian Mbappé, who is set to join Real Madrid this summer, was fined €30,000 and also received a suspended one-match ban for an inappropriate gesture made during the celebrations. Meanwhile, midfielder Dani Ceballos was fined €20,000 but avoided a suspension.

All three players remain available for Real Madrid’s upcoming Champions League quarter-final tie against Arsenal.

Vinícius Júnior, who was also under investigation, was cleared of any wrongdoing and will not face any sanctions.

UEFA emphasized that while the players' actions did not warrant immediate suspensions, the disciplinary measures serve as a warning. Should similar incidents occur, the suspended bans will be enforced.

The club has yet to release an official response, though sources close to the team suggest internal discussions are ongoing regarding the conduct of its players.
